UNICEF WCARO is seeking a solution-oriented intern to join the Emergency team and support a BMZ Business Intelligence initiative. The intern will work in close collaboration with ICT Team. The intern will assist in the setup and maintenance of Web based systems and cloud-based servers destined to host various reports and dashboards for Organizational and Institutional use, and ensure the underlying dependencies are effectively deployed and managed. Additionally, this role will collaborate with the Regional Office team to review, test, and release reports and dashboards for Organizational use.

Internship description

The UNICEF Western and Central Africa Regional Office (WCARO) is coordinating a regional resilience programme in Sahel, implemented by UNICEF offices in Mali, Mauritania and Niger, in close collaboration with another UN agency (World Food Programme), over four years (2019-2023). The programme is funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) for an initial budget. The programme will generate numerous quantitative and qualitative data throughout the four year of implementation (21 different studies planned for 2020-2021 only) and it is therefore important to develop high-quality tools to support data visualization.

The primary objective for the assignment is to assist in the production for the account of the UNICEF Western and Central Africa Regional Office (WCARO) an interactive dashboard focused on the various indicators and the sharing of said indicators in the context of the Building Resilience in the Sahel Programme, by February 2021.

Scope of work

1. Assist in the development and implementation of backend functionalities and programme solutions.

  • Assist in the development of multitier web applications handling large amounts of formatted data
  • Assist in identification and use of well-documented, well maintained open-source frameworks and libraries for the implementation of new functionalities and solutions.
  • Support the T4D team on data organization, deployment, and usage of new solutions.
  • Assist in maintaining codebase using Distributed Version Control Systems and Collaboration Tools
  • Assist in the development of Backend APIs for data sharing

2. Data management, technical assistance and interoperability

  • Support in designing workflows to harmonize data gathering, organization, and management
  • Support in developing and managing workflows and APIs for integration into Web Applications.

Administrative issue

  • The intern will work under the supervision of the Resilience Programme Coordinator, within the Emergencies Section, WCARO who will be responsible for the general coordination and scheduling and in close collaboration with the T4D specialist. Weekly meetings will be held between the intern and its supervisors to discuss progress and adjustments.
  • The intern will be provided with a desk office, UNICEF email address and will be using UNICEF provided ICT equipment.
  • The regular office hours will apply to the intern.

Internship requirements

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have

  • Be enrolled in an undergraduate, graduate degree programme in Computer science, software engineering or have graduated within the past two years.
  •     * Applicants must be at least 18 years old.
  • Be proficient in at least one of UNICEF’s working languages: English, French.
  • Have excellent academic performance as demonstrated by recent university or institution records.
  • Have no immediate relatives (e.g. father, mother, brother, sister) working in any UNICEF office;
  • and Have no other relatives in the line of authority which the intern will report to.
