What we do
The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) works worldwide to provide humanitarian assistance to people affected by conflict and armed violence. We take action in response to emergencies and at the same time promote respect for international humanitarian law. We are an independent and neutral organization, and our mandate stems essentially from the Geneva Conventions of 1949. We work closely with National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and with their International Federation in order to ensure a concerted, rational and rapid humanitarian response to the needs of the victims of armed conflict or any other situation of internal violence. We direct and coordinate the international activities conducted in these situations.
Role description
The Regional Staff Psychosocial Support Coordinator for West Africa is based in Dakar and reports to the Head of Dakar Regional Delegation.
He/she supports implementation of the staff health strategy and, specifically, the mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS) strategy for staff within a given region, in coherence with the MHPSS-for-staff component of the staff health strategy, and in close collaboration with the staff health team.
Main responsibilities
  • Supporting the development and implementation of structured action plans in each delegation within the region, to promote mental health, prevent mental ill-health and respond to psychological distress and mental disorders among staff. This includes regular visits to delegations to actively support staff health teams, who are the primary implementers of the staff health strategy;
  • Helping staff health teams in the field conduct comprehensive assessments of staff MHPSS needs and developing corresponding action plans;
  • Boosting good managerial practices by offering backing to team leaders and managers on communication, basic psychological support, leadership, teamwork, conflict management and other relevant topics;
  • Supporting strategies and action to increase staff mental health awareness, strengthening self-care strategies and decreasing the stigma associated with psychological suffering and help-seeking;
  • Supporting the implementation of a peer-support system across the organization and supervision/intervision/guided reflexive practices in delegations and teams that are most exposed to the risks of secondary traumatic stress;
  • Building the capacity of, providing direct support to and offers supervision of staff health teams in the field, to strengthen their ability to provide first-line basic clinical support to staff facing psychological distress, mental disorders, critical incidents, sexual harassment and/or sexual violence;
  • Offering systematic organizational and clinical support following security incidents in the field. Liaising with the Staff Health Unit in the country and the Staff Health Centre of Expertise at headquarters and providing support in case of need for medical evacuation of staff;
  • Offering direct, specialized clinical support to staff experiencing psychological distress, mental disorders, critical incidents, sexual harassment and/or sexual violence;
  • Supporting the development of an external global referral network of trusted mental health professionals for staff in need of long-term psychological and psychiatric support;
  • Monitoring and reporting on all matters related to the main duties and responsibilities and other activities as needed.
Scope & impact

The Regional Staff Psychosocial Support Coordinator has technical supervision over Staff Health Officers and Staff Health Managers on all aspects of mental health and psychosocial support for staff
Internally, he/she interacts with the management of delegations, Human Resources Department, Staff Psychologist (headquarters), Organizational Psychologist (headquarters), Regional Staff Health Coordinator, Staff Health Officers and Staff Health Managers.
Externally, he/she interacts with regional and local providers of MHPSS services.
Desired profile and skills
  • Master degree or equivalent in clinical psychology;
  • Valid license to practise in country of residence;
  • Minimum ten years of experience, including at least four years’ post-graduate professional experience in clinical psychology;
  • Experience in post-incident support;
  • At least two years’ experience in the humanitarain sector;
  • Proven experience as a member of a multisciplinary team;
  • Previous experience in designing and implementing MHPSS systems within organizations;
  • Experience in project management, from development to implementation (including assessment and monitoring processes);
  • Experience managing teams;
  • Fluency in English and French.
Our operational & field constraints
In line with the principle of neutrality, the ICRC does not assign personnel to a country of which they are nationals
  • Candidates must be in good health and will have to do a medical check-up prior to departure in the field
  • Candidates must hold a valid driving license for manual transmission vehicles and be able to drive such vehicles independently in unfamiliar terrain
  • Candidates must be prepared to accept unaccompanied postings (i.e. no spouse, partner, children or dependents) for at least 6 months
