Org. Setting and Reporting

This position is located within the United Nations Office for West Africa and the Sahel (UNOWAS), Dakar. The Gender Affairs Officer will report to the Mission Gender Affairs Officer.

Responsibilities

Within delegated authority, the Gender Affairs Officer will be responsible for performing the following duties:

  • Supports the implementation of UN Security Council Resolutions on Women, Peace and Security and the DPPA Women, Peace and Security Policy (June 2019).
  • Supports the process of implementing the Mission’s Gender Work Plan and strategy to mainstream gender considerations into the work of each mission component.
  • Supports knowledge management and data collection with regard to gender policy and facilitates the collection and exchange of information between partners and the Gender Unit.
  • Drafts, collates and edits specified results-based inputs for all gender related reports and documentation as required.
  • Supports the results-based budgeting (RBB) process and provides substantive inputs to results based reporting and analysis
  • Supports the delivery of gender training to uniformed and civilian Mission personnel and conduct orientation activities on gender markers in the mission.
  • Facilitates the development and implementation of annual workplans of the 17 chapters of the Working Group on Women, Youth, Peace and Security in West Africa and the Sahel.
  • Supports the Working Group’s resource mobilization efforts.
  • Undertakes relevant research activities based on the needs expressed by various actors and members of the Working Group, and in line with the Gender Unit plans.
  • Supports women’s networks working on Gender, Women, Peace and Security issues within the region, including, NOPSWECO, ROAJELF, MARWOPNET, Senegal-the Gambia-Guinea Bissau Forum for Peace and Security and the G-5 Sahel Women’s Platform.
  • Coordinates activities aimed at updating the database on Gender, Women, Peace and Security in West Africa and the Sahel.
  • Performs other duties as required.

Competencies

Education

An advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent degree) in gender studies, law, international relations, social studies, or in a related area is required. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Work Experience

  • A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in the field of international relations, law, gender and/or peacekeeping issues at policy and operational levels.
  • Experience in the promotion of gender equality in a post conflict setting is required.
  • At least three years of field experience in one or a combination of the thematic areas: gender mainstreaming; analysis and monitoring of the implementation of women, peace and security agenda; women’s political participation is required.
  • Experience in the conception, roll-out and monitoring of gender markers is highly desirable.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the Secretariat. For this position, fluency in French and English (both oral and written) is required.

Assessment

Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.

This position is temporarily available until [15.10.2020]. If the selected candidate is a staff member from the United Nations Secretariat, the selection will be administered as a temporary assignment.
