Job Description (Roles and Responsibilities)  

Main purpose of job

To improve and maintain a high level of communication and engagement with a range of stakeholders and boost the profile of the UK government and the British Embassy Dakar within Senegal and Cape Verde, and more widely. To support the Embassy on crisis preparedness.

Roles and responsibilities

The successful candidate will lead on Embassy communications, proposing and implementing innovative ways for the Embassy to engage with the people that traditional diplomacy does not always reach. The jobholder will take a strategic and forward-looking approach, pro-actively identifying opportunities for communicating across the range of Embassy activities. These include trade and investment, education, human rights, economic development, tackling shared threats, and English language and culture. The job holder will develop and manage the Embassy’s network of relationships with the media and key communications contacts.

Key activities as below

As the communications lead on Senegal (70%):

  • Planning and delivering communications campaigns to maximise the visibility and impact of the UK’s activities in Senegal.
  • Liaising with the media and other key partners in communicating the UK’s role in Senegal; helping plan and manage embassy events.
  • Developing and monitoring the Embassy’s social media presence; keeping gov.uk pages up-to-date.
  • Writing speeches and talking points for senior members of the team for use at events and with the media as and when needed.

As communications lead for Cape Verde (20%):

  • Creating and maintaining a facebook page and keep gov.uk page up-to-date.
  • To work closely with the consular team on any consular communications.

Crisis Management (10%):

  • Supporting Embassy crisis preparedness through coordinating the crisis exercises calendar, ensuring the Crisis Management Plan is kept up-to-date, and helping staff members be crisis aware and trained.

The job holder will also be back-up Political and Projects Desk Officer.

Strong organisational skills are essential, along with creative flair and an eye for detail.

Flexibility is important, as staff frequently need to step in to support each other. Where overtime is required (for example for evening events at the Embassy where communication plays an important role), the job holder can claim time off in lieu.

  • Ability to communicate clearly in writing and orally.

  • Excellent organisational skills and attention to detail.
  • Good customer service skills.
