Background to the Assignment

International Medical Corps interventions in Central African Republic are providing emergency health and nutrition services, as well as emergency protection assistance in response to gender-based violence perpetrated against internally displaced persons and communities.

International Medical Corps, with the support of OFDA, DFID and ECHO, is the first responder in the humanitarian crisis in CAR in the provinces of Ouaka, Vakaga and Haute-Kotto. International Medical Corps has also extended its partnership through the Bekou Trust Fund to carry out a multi-year project; CAR Health System Strengthening Project.

IMC’s protection activities are largely focused on Gender Based Violence prevention (GBV) and response. This year, with the support of OFDA, the program is seeing an improving of prevention activities. Like most of society, CAR people evolve in a patriarchal system in which women’s right are not respected. IMC plans to target men in preventing GBV through the approach Engaging Men as role model in preventing GBV, because it seems important to create an environment safer for communities in general and for women and girls in particular. Men are in position to influence social norms, attitudes, gender roles and expectations, and stop violence.

Purpose of the Assignment

Build the knowledge and skills of the Participants to serve as facilitators of Men Discussion Group, using the required tools and respond to challenging situations that may arise during the implementation.

Increase the understanding of participants in the use of positive masculinity throughout the intervention. Take into consideration opinion and view of women throughout the intervention.

Scope of the Assignment

  • Adapt module and tools on engaging men as role model approach in preventing GBV in CAR context
  • Develop a clear work plan for the training of IMC protection staff and selected community facilitators
  • Facilitate the training during 2 weeks for IMC staff and community volunteers to implement the approach
  • Provide the final Men discussion group curriculum adapted on needs and context of CAR
  • Provide a training report with recommendations

Implementation of the Assignment Deliverables

The consultant should submit a work plan of the implementation of the initiative at the beginning of the training, provide an adapted curriculum at the end of the training and the final report including recommendation on implementation as final deliverable at the end of the contract.

Experience / Qualifications Qualification

  • Higher degree in social sciences, communication, public health or relevant degree men

Experience

  • 3 Years of working experience on GBV programming and working as men engagement initiative in DRC.
  • Familiarity with specific Men Engagement methodology used in DRC, and experience providing training. Experience in facilitating the positive masculinity approach in the field preferred
  • Ability to work in difficult environment with basic living conditions

Competency

  • Able to manage and provide guidance to participants through the process of assessing and reflecting on issues of power and gender that will arise in training room
  • Good facilitation skills, and intercultural communication

Other

  • Must be fluent in French. Preferred speak English and write
