GIZ recruits a Regional Coordinator

GIZ hiring a Regional Coordinator Central and West Africa (m/f/d/) for the African Forest Landscape Restoration Initiative (AFR100).

GIZ International Services is implementing « The African Forest Landscape Restoration Initiative (AFR100) ».

AFR100 is a multi-actor-partnership of 30 African governments and numerous technical and financial partners.  AFR100 (the African Forest Landscape Restoration Initiative) is a country-led effort to bring 100 million hectares of land in Africa into restoration by 2030. It aims to accelerate restoration to enhance food security, increase climate change resilience and mitigation, and combat rural poverty.

Objectives and Expected Outcomes for the Appointment of the Regional Coordinators

Each Regional Coordinator is expected to drive the AFR100 initiative towards the following outcomes:

  • Engagement and participation of regional stakeholders: Increased ownership of the AFR100 agenda by forest country governments at all levels, the private sector, and forestry country civil society organizations
  • Accelerated actions towards the scale-up of restoration activities: Create opportunities to accelerate action for the scale-up of restoration activities, fostering public and private investments and private sector and civil society activities
  • Connectivity and communication of partners’ initiatives: Improved transparency on the initiatives of AFR100 Partners in the region, facilitating action-focused collaboration and learning opportunities within the region

Job description

Under the guidance of the AFR100 Secretariat, the hosting organization (GIZ) and in coordination with the AFR100 Management Team and the respective Regional Committees, each AFR100 Regional Coordinator will have the following responsibilities:

  • Build new partnerships and coordinate existing AFR100 partnerships on a national and regional level to strengthen collaboration for scaled-up Forest Landscape Restoration (FLR) interventions, including mobilizing the private sector and investors (both local and international)
  • Support partner countries in the development and execution of Forest Landscape Restoration (FLR) National Strategies (implementation strategy to achieve country targets) and to establish a legal framework/model for investment to diversify sources of funding
  • Strengthen capacities of governmental AFR100 focal points on FLR, resource mobilization, monitoring, reporting, and other relevant topics through the organisation of trainings, webinars, exchange visits, etc.
  • Create a people-centered and inclusive engagement framework at the community level and with national governments in the region to ensure the effective participation of women and youth
  • Contribute to the AFR100 Knowledge Management and reporting mechanism to ensure the constant flow of information on lessons learnt, sound practices, and other important publications from the regions
  • Support the establishment and maintenance of an AFR100 monitoring system, at national and regional levels
  • Drive the agenda of Regional Committee meetings

Job requirements 

  • Preferably 5 years of experience working within programme management in a development context.
  • Experience in forestry / agroforestry, agriculture and land use, natural resources management, international development is a plus!
  • Previous experience in East and Southern Africa and West and Central Africa
  • Demonstrated previous experience supervising teams and capacity building for organisations with which the programme works
  • Proven experience managing relationships in complex organisations with multiple stakeholders across government
  • Experience working with and coordinating cross-cultural teams across several locations
  • Track record in successfully maintaining communication channels towards several partners
  • Experience in managing multi-stakeholder initiatives with governments and private sector partners, preferably in the sustainable land use space, and working in cross-country settings
  • Excellent communications and people skills
  • Fluent in English and French; other languages would be an asset
